Kevin Gibson, the Production Director for The Sims at EA, sat down with us to chat about the milestone. Having been a pivotal part of the series since 2003, Gibson has witnessed firsthand its transformation. The team is buzzing with excitement over the anniversary, and for Gibson, revisiting the series’ roots has been an incredibly rewarding experience.

“Players have shown us time and again that no one understands life quite like The Sims does, and we wanted to honor this incredible shared journey,” shares Gibson. “Our journey kicked off with an idea that made waves at E3. Now, 25 years later, we find ourselves a part of countless lives across generations.”

He went on to express heartfelt gratitude, adding, “This milestone wouldn’t be possible without every player who joined us from the start at E3 in 1999 or those just discovering The Sims 4 today. Celebrating this journey through all the years and all the different gameplay possibilities is our way of saying thank you to everyone involved.”

The Blast From The Past event is a joyous throwback to the early 2000s, bringing back iconic clothing, furniture, and decor from those initial games into The Sims 4. A personal highlight for me includes the neon inflatable chairs, a sumptuous three-tiered cake, and the unforgettable light-up dance floor—a nostalgic nod to countless in-game dance-offs.

Reflecting on the evolution of both The Sims and the world over the last 25 years, it’s fascinating to remember when a landline was an essential household item back in the first game. Fast forward to The Sims 4, and mobile phones have become a staple part of Sim life, much like in our reality.

Gibson emphasized the intrinsic value of revisiting The Sims’ history. “We dug into the franchise’s past, playing the original games and revisiting our various launches to recall all the diverse ways people engage with life through The Sims,” Gibson notes. “Everyone at the studio treasures different aspects of the series, and sharing these cherished moments during the 25th birthday celebration has been immensely enjoyable.”

“The Sims was notoriously tricky; your Sims often met amusingly tragic fates,” Gibson admits. “However, the core idea was always your story with the game adding its humorously challenging touch.”
